Beth Israel Congregation owns and sells burial rights in a special section of Arborcrest Memorial Park as a service to members and families of the Congregation and to other members of the Jewish community of Washtenaw County.

What is a burial right?Purchase of the burial right to a site in the Garden gives you the right to have one person interred in that site. You may transfer that right to other members of your immediate family, if they are eligible for burial in the Garden. Your cost also includes landscaping and perpetual care of the landscaping on the site. The landscaping contract is held by Arborcrest Memorial Park. After interment, the cemetery staff will install a frame around the grave, plant evergreens and place white marble stones around the memorial headstone.

Funeral costs such as burial vault, grave opening and closing, mortuary fees and memorial headstone are not included in your purchase of burial rights.

Who is eligible for burial? Any Jewish person is eligible for burial in the Garden.

Questions about burial practices: Burial must be performed in accordance with Jewish law and custom; therefore the burial of cremated remains is not permitted in the Garden. Rabbi Robert Dobrusin of Beth Israel Congregation is the Rabbinic authority for Beth Israel Memorial Garden. All questions of Jewish law relating to the cemetery should be addressed to him. Rabbi Dobrusin sets policy in accordance with the rulings of the Committee on Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly (Conservative Movement).

Advance Payment Plans: In advance of need, burial rights may be purchased in a lump sum, or over a period of one, two, three, four or five years, payable quarterly in equal payments. In the event of death and interment, the unpaid balance on a site is due 30 days after interment.

Other Pre-Arrangements: If a burial right is pre-purchased, it is customary for Arborcrest Memorial Park personnel to call and arrange a short visit to review "historical information" to be kept in their files, and to review other funeral arrangements which may be pre-arranged and pre-purchased. A pre-purchaser or deed owner is free to make these pre-arrangements at his or her discretion.

Repurchase and Transfer: You may transfer a burial right to another member of your immediate family without cost. You may sell a burial right back to the congregation at any time for 90% of the price you paid for it. For a tax benefit, you may donate it to Beth Israel Congregation, which will acknowledge the gift of the burial right at its current value at time of transfer. You may not transfer a burial right or offer it for sale to any other person or organization.
