Social Action Committee
This committee is involved in a large variety of outreach activities to the
local community in Washtenaw County. It offers educational events on local,
national and international affairs, fosters the "greening of the
congregation," and pursues other tikkun olam and social action activities.
The committee sponsors lectures on current events including the Middle
East, partners with local organizations such as the Habitat for Humanity,
and sponsors the annual Overflow Shelter for Homeless Men which takes place
at Beth Israel the two weeks around Christmas and New Year, as well as the
annual Red Cross Blood Drive. In addition, the committee designates
contributions from the Social Action Fund each year to local charitable
organizations.

- Tuesday August 19 Alpha House -- meals and overnight staffing by Beth Israel volunteers. Email Mary Schuman Owatonna@aol.com if you are interested in volunteering.
Each year, Beth Israel provided volunteers for Interfaith Hospitality Network's Alpha House. Alpha House is a shelter for homeless families in Washtenaw County and Beth Israel was one of the founding congregations in 1992. Beth Israel shares volunteering with the Unitarian Universalist Congregation. We provide food and volunteers for Tuesday and Thursday evenings. We do this four times per year in the months of January, May, August and November. Volunteers make dinner for the residents and bring it to the shelter, host at dinner time and during the evening. We also provide a volunteer to stay overnight at the shelter. For further information about volunteering at IHN/Alpha House, please contact Mary Schuman at or 668-6449.
