This is the class for complete beginners with no prior knowledge. Learn letters and vowels and how to put them together and read aloud. Gain an understanding of how Hebrew differs from English and how it works. Gain some basic vocabulary and build confidence in our approach to Hebrew. *If you have any experience, you should sign up for Prayer Book Reading (not this class).

6:30-7:15pm 5 Prayer Book Reading

If you can read Hebrew and want to improve your fluency, speed and confidence, this is the class for you! We will focus on texts from the prayer book and the Jewish Bible, dedicate some class time to discussing meaning and recurring vocabulary, and learn some reading principles to help with fluency and pronunciation. We will use the book Prayer Book Hebrew, The Easy Way.

7:30-8:15pm Beginning Conversation

This class offers a taste of modern Hebrew for Communication. Reading Hebrew is a plus but not a requirement. We will jump right into Hebrew and learn to introduce ourselves, ask questions, describe things like our families, our jobs, and other common topics. We may even learn to order in an Israeli restaurant. Come dip your toes in this Modern-ancient language and roll some Hebrew off your tongue!

8:30-9:15pm Advanced Conversation

If you can carry on a conversation in Hebrew on various topics, this class is for you. Come join a relaxed and welcoming hour of Hebrew only. Participants talk and read together about a wide range of subjects, while highlighting grammatical points, enriching vocabulary, and exploring cultural references. "Hebrew Table" at its best!

Meet Milka Eliav, BIC's Hebrew teacher

Meet Morah Milka! Born and raised in Israel, I have a BA in English and a Teacher's Certificate from Bar Ilan University in Ramat-Gan, and an M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership from Brandeis University.  I have taught all levels of modern Hebrew at the University of Michigan for more than a decade, ran the Hebrew for High School Credit program "Keshet", taught a variety of adult Hebrew courses at BIC over the years, and have been teaching Hebrew and Judaic Studies at the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor since 2012.

I am a self proclaimed Hebrew enthusiast and passionate about the evolution of Hebrew, and clarifying complex language forms and structures. I care about Jewish education and I love the Jewish diversity Ann Arbor offers.

I have two kids, 26 and 19; my extended family lives in Israel and I try to spend time there every summer.  I enjoy cooking and I love going on nature hikes in the countless parks and preserves in and around Ann Arbor.
